About Time Zones
Time zones are areas that observe a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. They tend to follow the boundaries of countries or their subdivisions because it is convenient for areas in close commercial or other communication to keep the same time.
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. Local times are expressed as positive or negative offsets from UTC, e.g. UTC+8 is eight hours ahead of UTC.
Time Zone Facts:
- There are 24 standard time zones
- Some regions use 30 or 45-minute offsets
- Many locations observe Daylight Saving Time
- Some countries span multiple time zones
Notable Time Zones:
- UTC+0: Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
- UTC-5/UTC-4: Eastern Time (New York)
- UTC-8/UTC-7: Pacific Time (Los Angeles)
- UTC+8: China Standard Time (one country, one time zone)
